Indian exhibitors at the South African International Trade Exhibition, SAITEX 2002, here have tied up deals worth more than $55 million during the four-day expo that ended Friday and there may be more business coming.

JOHANNESBURG: "It has been a very successful participation by 30 Indian companies that decided to exhibit at SAITEX 2002," Safdar H. Khan, general manager of the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO), said. The Indian participants have exhibited wares ranging from steel, electronics, plastics, spices, tea, home crafts, and software to industrial equipment and agricultural implements. They were subsidized by ITPO, which arranged reduced rates for stands at the expo and also contributed towards airfares for exhibitors. Khan said the success of India's largest delegation to the annual trade expo augured well for the "Focus Africa" initiated by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry to enhance the country's trade with the sub-Saharan African region. Trade between India and sub-Saharan Africa has grown from US$893 million in 1991-92 to US$3,390 million in 2000-01, an increase of more than 280 percent in nine years.
