Indians are top spenders on music downloads in Asia

Mumbai: India leads the pack amongst Asian countries when it comes to paying for downloading music online. 17 percent of users in India pay for getting online music. This was revealed in a recent survey by Synovate, a market research company.

The survey encompassed 1,135 internet users in India ranging in age from 15 to 24. When compared with the rest of Asia, Indians scored big for their love for music. 82 percent of youth in India asserted that music is an integral part of their lives as opposed to only 67 percent in rest of Asia.

Technology seems to have an important role in taking the people to music. Music supporting mobile phones are increasing in the market. 52 percent of the Indian youth turns to their mobile handsets for music. This was followed by TV channels getting a share of 19 percent. Other music source options included PCs, radio and MP3 players.

Another finding in the study, which combines mobile phones and music downloads, revealed that downloading of music directly onto mobile is far more popular mode to consume music as 23 per cent of Indians resort to it compared to 21 per cent in rest of Asia.

While China has highest number of free music downloaders at 58 percent, 44 percent of Indians free music online.

The study was undertaken pan Asia in the countries of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
