Indian-origin researcher makes PCs 100 times faster

Toronto: Indian-origin researcher Sanjeev John and his colleague Xun Ma of the University of Toronto have discovered new behaviour of light which could lead to cooler and faster computing.
The two quantum optics researchers have discovered "new behaviours'' of light changes within photonic crystals that could lead to faster optical information processing and compact computers that don't overheat.

"We discovered that by sculpting a unique artificial vacuum inside a photonic crystal, we can completely control the electronic state of artificial atoms (light) within the vacuum,'' lead author Xun Ma was quoted as saying in a statement here Tuesday.
"This discovery can enable photonic computers that are more than a hundred times faster than their electronic counterparts, without heat dissipation issues and other bottlenecks currently faced by electronic computing,'' said Ma.
Added Sanjeev John, "We designed a vacuum in which light passes through circuit paths that are one one-hundredth of the thickness of a human hair, and whose character changes drastically and abruptly with the wavelength of the light.
"A vacuum experienced by light is not completely empty, and can be made even emptier. It's not the traditional understanding of a vacuum.''
Ma said,"In this vacuum, the state of each atom - or quantum dot - can be manipulated with color-coded streams of laser pulses that sequentially excite and de-excite it in trillionths of a second.
"These quantum dots can in turn control other streams of optical pulses, enabling optical information processing and computing.''
The researchers, whose original aim was to gain a deeper understanding of optical switching as part of an effort to develop an all-optical micro-transistor that could operate within a photonic chip, ended up discovering a new and unexpected dynamic switching mechanism.
Their research also led to the discovery of corrections to one of the most fundamental equations of quantum optics, known as the Bloch equation.
Said John, "This new mechanism enables micrometer scale integrated all-optical transistors to perform logic operations over multiple frequency channels in trillionths of a second at microwatt power levels, which are about one millionth of the power required by a household light bulb.
"That this mechanism allows for computing over many wavelengths as opposed to electronic circuits which use only one channel, would significantly surpass the performance of current day electronic transistors.''
The study has been published in Physical Review Letters.

thanks for valuable comments sir an another note can we use the same technology and drive the unity between all people in andhra pradesh can we radically change the face of rural scenario that is can we educate rural youth with current skills :
1.May be we can be proactive and equip rural youth to be entreprenaurs like for example :Tata is mulling/in process of outsourcing manufacturing of Nano with a concept like ditsributed manufacturing
May be if it works out well Tata will do the same with Swatch water filters they have developed.
2. Just like Gujarath CM does an excellent job in getting projects the AP govt can be proactive and attract upcoming outsourcing that will happen from HAL and ISRO and thus create jobs again the rural youth(Graduates,ITI dIPLOMA) from interiors of Hyd sorroundings can be made employable.
3.We can develop and promote clean technolgies one example is Praj Industries (http://www.praj.net/) may be ap govt can identify most dry regions and promote jastropa based crop so that income is generated ground up at the village level ,the oil produced can be shipped to Hyderabad for consumption of automobiles, generator sets in shops etc.
4.Speed up the Metro project and setup train maintainence facilties around HYD and set up the infrastructure again rural youth(graduates ,diploma ITI holders) can be targeted
thus creating sustainable jobs and security, maybe even encourage banks to give loans Tata can provide housing (like the one they are doing for lowincome).
5.Our Nearest neighbour China is well on to become a major economy why cannot we revive people to people contacts and launch Toursim India campaign in Shangai and Beijeing probably at the same time train rural young graduates with language skills(Cantonese/Manadarin,Korean) and employ the same in those offices at the same time when we get the chinese as a group to Hyderabad we can promote Hyd - Warangal sectors ,the people who co-ordinate and show these places will be these youth who are skilled
and so on why not we work towards these goals as a team and defeat the forces that want to play with peple 's emotions and have a dividing politics cannot we aim for developmental politics ,can the enerygy of NGOS ,Universities, academia ,Political leadership work in this way as DR APJ Abdul kalam says facilitate towards the development.
it makes me sick and tired again and again regional differences ,are brought to the fore.

6: Discovery of properties and phenomena by
Indians always seem to happen when they
research abroad. I recollect fewer instances
where Indians living in India discovered in
India compared to when they are abroad.
Does that mean that talent is not properly nurtured in India? I started to believe that it is not....

10:According to my few years of knowledge in
research in India, I can say "yes" to your
"Q" "Does that mean that talent is not
properly nurtured in India?". Actualy the
most of the top most officials in resrach
fields in India are doing only Office jobs
not research and helping the researchers who
want to do something.

14: It is heartening to note Indian-origin
researcher Sanjeev John and his colleague Xun
Ma of the University of Toronto have
discovered new behaviour of light which could
lead to cooler and faster computing. This
will be furthering the concept of optical
switching .
In telecommunication, an optical switch is a switch that enables signals in optical fibers or integrated optical circuits (IOCs) to be selectively switched from one circuit to another.
The word is used on several levels. In commercial terms (such as the telecom optical switch market size) it refers to any piece of circuit switching equipment between fibers. The majority of installed systems in this category actually use electronic switching between fiber transponders. Systems that perform this function by physically switching light are often referred to as photonic switches, independent of how the light itself is switched. Away from the world of telecom systems, an optical switch is the unit that actually switches light between fibers, and a photonic switch is one that does this by exploiting nonlinear material properties to steer light (i.e. to switch wavelengths or signals within a given fiber).
Hence a certain portion of the optical switch market is made up of photonic switches. These will contain within them an optical switch which will in a small number of cases, be a photonic switch.
An optical switch may operate by mechanical means such as physically shifting an optical fiber to drive one or more alternative fibers or by electro-optic effects, magneto-optic effects, or other methods. Slow optical switches such as those using moving fibers may be used for alternate routing of an optical transmission path such as routing around a fault. Fast optical switches such as those using electro-optic or magneto-optic effects may be used to perform logic operations also included in this category are the semiconductor optical amplifiers which are optoelectronic devices that can be used as optical switches and be integrated with discrete or integrated microelectronic circuits.
