As many as 798 cases of website hacking were tracked by Cert-in in January this year the highest since June 2004. The sharp rise was primarily on account of mass defacement attempts detected in January, which accounted for 699 site defacements. In February, the number came down to 218. In contrast, the number of site defacement stood at 49 in December 2004 that included 21 ‘.com’ websites, 8 ‘.co.in’ sites and 5 ‘.ac.in’ sites, besides some in ‘.gov.in’ and ‘.org.in’, domains.
