Indian traffic increases, Boeing expects fresh orders

Farnborough: Boeing, the U.S.-based aircraft maker is expecting to get fresh orders from Indian carriers later this year, because of increased passenger market and expansion of more domestic airlines into international routes, reports Tarun Shukla of Mint. As Air India and Jet Airways are expanding operations, the company is changes to its existing order book from them. SpiceJet flies 21 Boeing 737 aircraft and is now also going international. According to Dinesh Keskar, Chairman, Boeing India, in keeping with the true potential of India, there would be some orders next year. But depending on the lead time issues, this year may also see some orders. In the first half of 2010, Indian airlines has registered a passenger growth of about 22 percent, compared to the last year's growth of 7 percent. Indian airlines will soon start ordering aircraft for fleet expansion, according to a report by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. The report said that IndiGo is to acquire up to 150 aircraft, SpiceJet 47 aircraft, and Air India is planning to lease 10 A330s as well as several A320s and AT Jet Airways is also in talks with Boeing to change an existing order for 10 787-8 Dreamliners placed in 2006, then valued at $1.5 billion (Rs7,065 crore). The airline is to buy the stretched version of Dreamliner, which will start flying in 2013. Between January and June, 25.71 million passengers travelled on domestic carriers, while it was only 21.09 million in the same time last year, a 21.9 percent rise.
