Indian touch to the world of innovation?

Some of the Indians CEOs carry this unique management trait - the 'jugaad' factor, which is the tendency to resort to an unplanned makeshift in the company. While this can be perceived negatively, it can also be a positive trait because of its inherent inventiveness and survival instinct, reports Business Week.
Recession-slammed corporations no longer have money to burn on research and development. Likewise, U.S. consumers are trading down to good-enough products and services. Meantime, the Indian economy continues to plow ahead despite the global recession - it grew at a 7.9 percent clip in the third quarter, suggesting its executives have a winning strategy.
Companies as varied as Best Buy, Cisco Systems, and Oracle are employing jugaad as they create products and services that are more economical both for suppliers and consumers. "In today's challenging times, American companies are forced to learn to operate with Plan Bs," notes Navi Radjou, who heads the recently formed Centre for India and Global Business at England's Cambridge University. "But Indian engineers have long known how to invent with a whole alphabet soup of options that work, are cheap, and can be rolled out instantly. That is jugaad."
Prasad Kaipa, a former Manager at Apple's in-house training university, uses jugaad in the courses he's teaching at Hyderabad's Indian School of Business. The University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, where Indian-born Professor C.K. Prahalad teaches, has opened a research office near Infosys' headquarters in India so faculty members can observe how Indian software firms come up with ideas. McKinsey consultants have begun talking up jugaad principles with clients, too.
Sandeep Vij, Vice President and General Manager of Cisco Systems in Bangalore who heads a new unit that makes energy monitoring systems, says a good example is an Indian villager who constructs a vehicle to transport goats and cattle by turning an irrigation hand pump into a makeshift diesel engine for a wooden cart.
Its application also can be seen in Tata Motors' much hyped Nano, sold for the equivalent of $2,500 to so-called bottom-of-the-pyramid consumers who had been priced out of the auto market. "At Tata Group, we're used to thinking like this," says Ananth Krishnan, CTO of Tata Consultancy Services. "The jugaad mindset is crucial. It's not just jargon."
U.S. firms recently started putting jugaad into practice. At Best Buy's headquarters, in Minnesota, Kalendu Patel, the retailer's Executive Vice President for emerging business, is holding jugaad workshops to help store personnel and managers come up with new products or services that could be added easily and inexpensively to generate more sales per store.
Top executives at Cisco, which opened what the San Jose company calls a second global headquarters in Bangalore in 2007, are importing the Indian mindset as they meld teams of U.S. engineers with Indian supervisors. "The innovation agenda in India is affordability and scale," says Wim Elfrink, Cisco's Chief Globalization Officer, who moved from San Jose to Bangalore in 2007. "People are masters of managing costs down, but not creativity. If Indian engineers find out an executive has an MBA, they will say, unlearn, and observe."

I am not Indian but I join the Indians\\\' pride in Jugaad.
We can all learn from innovation. Great ideas, innovative ideas change the way organizations carry out their activities. It can change the way people perceive and do their work. It can sustain their employability.
Learning and unlearning are necessary if people are to contribute to the success of organizations.

I am with Dr. Nellore's view completely. I also believe that Indians as a thought process have been known to find quick fixes that can be broadly termed as "innovative fix" and it works almost all the time.
I dont think that you can take away the creative part in it as well. It is indeed creative and it has the potential of being "path-breaking" as well. Nano is one such example. Applaud to the word called "Jugaad". Welcome world to the world of "Jugaad".

I am glad that Indian concept of Innovation,Jugaad is gaining popularity.
"Jugaad" is colloquial Hindi word that can mean an innovative fix, often pejoratively used for solutions that bend rules, or a resource that can be used as such or a person who can solve a vexatious issue. It is used as much for enterprising street mechanics as for political fixers. In essence, though it is a tribute to native genius, and lateral thinking.
Even though in everyday life, a Jugaad can be a solution, in context of Management, Jugaad is essentially a person who has some special capability or access to a resource or even access to another Jugaad that can be useful under extreme or special circumstances.
In a thought provoking article†The IT Innovation Landscape in Indiaâ€
Sharad Sharma brought out lucid presentation of Indian Innovations:
Bottom-of-the-Pyramid Innovation Ecosystem–Nascent But Promising
Bottom-of-the-pyramid (BoP) is a big opportunity segment for IT. Right now, little or no IT is consumed by micro-firms. India alone has more than seven million micro-firms that are otherwise doing well and are hungry to leverage affordable IT. If the IT industry can figure out the right type of affordable solutions then a whole new wave of consumption will get triggered.
India has done very well in applying Prof. C. K. Prahalad’s ideas to create breakthrough BoP solutions is healthcare (e.g. Narayana Hrudayalaya), agri-markets (e.g. eChoupal) and related areas. This has created a nascent BoP innovation ecosystem. Admittedly, it is still not very mature but it is now turning its attention to the IT space.
A BoP innovation ecosystem is similar to a product ecosystem but has important differences as well. One difference is that BoP solution is almost never a tweaked version of what exists today. Jeffrey Immelt of GE, summed this up in a recent interview saying that “the right solution is not an American product stripped down to meet an Indian price, but a truly Indian product designed from the ground up to carry an Indian price.â€
An even more important difference is that, very often, the final solution is not a product at all! It ends up being a mix of products, Internet services, mobile content and micro-franchizing. So creating this solution requires not only breakthrough product architectures, process models and/or business models, but also building of new market structures and value chains.
Therefore, building a BoP solution is a daunting challenge. The only way to meet this challenge is to embrace in-market incubation of products and business models.
India is fast emerging as the preferred incubation lab for BoP solutions. There are three factors driving this. First, India has the most experience with BoP solutions till date. Second, the rapid economic growth has created favorable market conditions for BoP solutions in a range of areas, most certainly, including IT.
Third, the early BoP incubation efforts have had promising results. For instance, Texas Instruments has launched an ultra-low-cost-cellphone chipset, LoCosto, which was conceived and engineered in India. Intel has experimented with its Classmate solution to tackle the One-Laptop-Per-Child opportunity. Nokia has struck gold with its inexpensive no-frills made-for-India handset whose killer feature is a built-in flashlight.
A promising BoP incubation effort was named as one of the award finalists. HP Labs in India has developed a touch-keypad specifically for Indian non-English speaking consumers who are not familiar with the QWERTY keyboard. This keypad’s significance is that it makes a number of rural applications accessible to rural India.
Even though BoP innovation ecosystem is still at a nascent stage of its evolution, its emergence is a very promising development not just for India but also for the entire IT industry. This could open the door to a whole new world of consumption of IT products and solutions in a hitherto untouched segment of the market.
Innovate or perish is the Mantra in many Industries nowadays.

"SUSTAINABILITY" - THE ULTIMATE MANTRA FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL :
I am pleased to read about Indian creativity and its application to market products and services to consumers who are very cost conscious. Very soon, all of us would know the real challenge that we collectively face as humanity. We need to use our natural resources in a sustainable manner. There is no other way.
