Indian teens make washing machine with junks, runs without power

Bangalore: Sourabh Siyal and Tushar Agarwal, students of Christ College, designed a model which would pester people to take interest in environmental issues. Eco-wash, a washing machine was made out of junk material and ran on mechanical and kinetic energy, without the use of electricity.
"The junk materials include a discarded plastic bottle, which we used as a box to wash clothes. A pulley is attached to the plastic bottle to run the machine. The pulley moves with the help of kinetic energy and helps to wash clothes," explained Agarwal, who wants to be a scientific innovator.

"Our idea is to do away with electricity and come up with an alternative. The washing machine can be useful in big textile industries. We're planning to give our idea to one of India's leading garment manufacturing units," said Siyal, who too wanted to pursue research works in the field of science.
In another such example of innovation, four students of Outreach school, under the guidance of their Physics teacher developed an 'Earthquake predictor'. "The earthquake predictor is nothing but a borewell. The borewell is attached to a buzzer. The buzzer makes sound if the underground water level increases, which means that the movement of lava in the underground is moving at a faster rate, an indication of the likelihood of an earthquake. The fast movement of lava will force the water level to increase, which in turn will make the buzzer give out signals," said Subramanian K, a student.

Indians. This is very good step for saving
electricity as well as recycling of waste. It
should be published in front news for knowing

15: Good initiative.. but I am curious to know
how the huge amount of energy will be
supplied, without electricity. If it is
human-pedalling, I dont think its going to do
any good. The article says it uses
"Mechanical and kinetic energy".. Any Washing
machine uses Mechanical energy.. but the
question is how that enegergy will be
supplied. in case of conventional machines,
electric energy is converted to mechanical
energy. What's the case here? Secondly,
Kinetic energy generation needs velocity..
where from will the velocity come?

17: Tushar, I was also wondering about using
'Plastic" bottles for cleaning. From the
picture, it seems as if a plastic bottle is
used to hammer the clothes.. which is not how
a washing machine works. A conventional WM
vigirates water to a high degree, and its the
water power that washes clothes, without
beating/rubbing the clothes with any solid
object. Secondly, waste plastic in general is
toxic and corrosive. How will it withstand
detergant and water for long will be
interesting.

23: You would never find such success stories in
national/Regional news papers or
National/Regional News channels because they
do not fetch TRP's. I wish to see such
stories in the front page of any News paper

24: It is always good to encourage youngsters
when they come out with novel ideas.Probably
they may have inhibitions in giving out the
entire data as there are chances of the ideas
being stolen. But I am interested in knowing
the background of the inventors. Are they engg
students or science students?

27: Mechanical operated washing machines are not
new. Way back in 70s itself,I designed a
PEDAL OPERATED WASHING MACHINE. It consists
of a GI metal box of 2ft width and 2.5 ft
height with inside portion made curvature to
facilitate centrifugal motion. Inside the box
is fixed a FIBRE GLASS WHEEL and outside an
aluminum wheel. The whole set up is fixed on
the sewing machine upper portion by replacing
the sewing machine. The aluminum wheel of the
washing machine is connected through the belt
of the sewing machine.
There is opening to put clothes, water and soap powder. There is a pipe at the bottom to drain the used water.
Clothes are placed inside the box along with water and soap powder.Pedalling is done for 20 minutes. After that the clothes are taken out rinsed and dried.
The whole setup except the swing machine costs around Rs 1500(around US$32) and the materials are available locally and can be fabricated in local workshops.
When not in use, the box can be replaced by sewing machine. The unit is mobile.Pedalling acts as a sort of exercise.

29:Dear Jagadeesh
You say that you have invented this concept way back in the 7o's then where did it vanish since all these years. Sir, your talent is to be appreciated but since then you have hidden it within you and these guys today have brought it to the common people notice. If u invent something like this and if not shared then what is the use of such invention.
My hearty good wishes to the two youngsters for their success and bringing something to the nature and society.
Cheerz lol:)
