BANGALORE: Software products as a business in India have a potential of generating revenues to the tune of $7 billion and creating one million jobs by 2010, according to a report by Prof T R Madanmohan, Associate Professor (Technology and Operations), IIM, Bangalore. The report, titled ‘Indian software product sector: Challenges and a roadmap,’ reveals interesting facts. According to the analysis, nearly 27 percent of indigenous companies are in the technology space, 47 percent in applications and 30 percent in enterprise. The report maintains that there is a requirement of talent in disciplines such as product architecture, computing, AI, gaming, testing, commercialisation, and IPR management. Ecosystems need to be created and product companies need to be focused, said Madanmohan. Only 26 percent of start-ups have turned profitable and 30 percent of IT firms pursue services to sustain product development. Speaking to newspersons at the campus, Mr Deepak Ghaisas, CEO of i-flex Solutions, who chairs the Nasscom Product Forum, said, “India has a great future as product destination.” The indigenous software sector was still in the nascent stage and needed to be helped in terms of connections and networking by the Government, Nasscom President Kiran Karnik said.
