BANGALORE: The Indian server market accounted for an 8.5 percent share of the revenue market share in the Asia-Pacific region in the first quarter of 2005, as compared to 7.5 percent market share recorded in the same quarter in 2004. This represented a 23.6 percent growth for the quarter under review. According to Gartner Inc, China, South Korea and Australia were the top three markets in the Asia-Pacific, accounting for more than 60 percent of the total server revenue within the region in the first quarter. The Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) region witnessed the strongest growth rate compared to other regions in the first quarter of 2005. The positive economic outlook for most countries in the region drove the growth, according to Gartner. Total server-vendor revenue in the Asia-Pacific totaled $1.37 billion in the first quarter, an 8.9 percent increase from the same period last year. IBM (35.2 percent), Hewlett-Packard (33 percent) and Sun Microsystems (9.4 percent) continued to be the market leaders, although Sun lost market share in the region. Dell followed closely behind with yearly growth of 54.6 percent in revenue. The company did especially well in Taiwan and Malaysia, where more than 100 percent growth was reported. Server revenue running on the Linux platform increased just over 50 percent compared to a year ago, with 35 percent coming from China alone.
