Indian semiconductor industry set to touch new heights

Bangalore: The future of the Indian semiconductor industry looks bright according to many industry biggies who attended the Vision Summit 2010, the annual event of the India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the apex trade body representing the Indian semiconductor industry. The two-day event, organized along with the IT department of the government of Karnataka and UK Trade and Investment, was held from February 1 to 2. Europe and Israel were also part of the summit. Speaking at the fifth edition of the summit, Dr. G Madhavan Nair, Ex-Chairman, ISRO said, "There are tremendous market opportunities for development in the semiconductor industry in India and we have excellent talent in our country, but the challenge is how best we can utilize it and bring together all the talents for the overall growth of the industry." This year, the areas in focus were opportunities in the next decade, electronics, embedded software, engineering and technology services, challenges and solutions in the Indian market. Among the key speakers were C S Venkatraman, GM (Electrical and Electronics), ERC, Tata Motors, Ronald W Hovsepian, President and CEO, Novell and Francois Guibert, Corporate Vice President, STMicroelectronics. The Technovation Awards 2010 were also presented at the summit. Internet cloud found a special mention. C S Venkatraman predicted that internet cloud is approaching like a tsunami. He went on to forecast increased electronification of motor vehicles. Ronald Hovsepian added that new technology always brought new flexibility. Many interesting products were displayed too. Freescale's low-power, high-power communications processor QorlqP1022, Bharat Electronics Pre Shower-32 Channel Silicon Strip detector for CERN, VuNow's Internet TV Platform and Tachyon Technology's artificial intelligence based solution for intuitive Indian language input-Quillpad were showcased. The Karnataka Semiconductor Policy-2010 was unveiled at the Summit by the Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yeddyurappa and IT and BT Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu. The primary features of the policy were setting up of semiconductor units in Tier-2 cities of the state and providing financial assistance to startups and assistance for ATMP units. Naidu hoped that the semiconductor industry would touch the 400 billion mark by 2020. Pradip Dutta, Executive Council Convener for the summit, hailed Karnataka as the leader in promoting IT investment. "What made the summit truly remarkable is the release of the State Semiconductor Policy at the summit itself by the Chief Minister of the State of Karnataka. This clearly reflects the importance the State Government attaches to ISA and now we have to deliver on the targets," he added.
