Indian scientist to head global welding institute
Chennai: Indian atomic energy scientist and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) director Baldev Raj has been elected president of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). He is the first Indian and second Asian to be elected to head the IIW. Welding societies from 55 countries are its members. He will hold office for three years from 2011-2014. Baldev Raj will take over as the IIW president during the largest annual conference of global welding professionals - the 64th Annual Assembly of the IIW, to be held for the first time in India at Chennai in July 2011. Welding science and technology is most essential engineering component for the success of industries in consumable, energy, food, agriculture, security, transport and strategic sectors. The IIW's president shapes the agenda and the response to the needs and aspirations of the member countries. According to Baldev Raj, the theme of the IIW conference to be held next year is "Global trends in Joining, Cutting and Surfacing Technology" and there will also be an exhibition on welding technology, metallurgy and materials.
