Indian politicians are intelligent: U.S. politicians

By SiliconIndia,Monday, 16 November 2009, 18:16 Hrs
Bangalore: A seven-member delegation of young American politicians recently completed a two-week tour of India, wherein they learned about governance in India and sought to build Indo-U.S. cultural, economic and political ties. But more than anything else, what struck the Americans was the quality of Indian politicians, who they said are very intelligent.
Indian politicians are intelligent: U.S. politicians

More than anything, Brian Calle, a Republican and former Vice President of the Claremont institute was struck by the quality of Indian politicians. "They were very impressive, very intelligent and obviously tuned into the needs of their constituents. Those we spoke to have a vision of India becoming a true global superpower and have plans in place to achieve this - education reform, economic reform that focuses on job creation, improved health care and infrastructure, and so on."

The delegation, brought together by the American Council of Young Political Leaders, comprised Caucasians and African-Americans, and Democrats and Republicans. Democrats included former traveling Political Director for the 2004 John Kerry Presidential campaign, Amy Dacey, Seattle-area Member of the Washington state House of Representatives, Zachary Hudgins and Missouri State Representative Jamilah Nasheed.

Among Republicans were Utah State Representative Keith Grover, Paul Scapicchio of government relations firm ML Strategies and Mayor of Farmington, Michigan, Valerie Knol.

For each of the seven - all of whom are aged between 25 and 40 - it was their first trip to India, one that included visits to Delhi, Chennai, Goa, Pune and Mumbai. In Delhi, the delegation met several political leaders, including senior leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party and a few members of the Delhi assembly.

"I learned a lot about the political processes and party structures in India. In some ways, the American and Indian systems are similar. But there are many differences, too," said Nasheed. "Even within the coalitions themselves, I imagine it's very difficult to get all the different parties to agree on an overall agenda."

In Chennai, the delegation met Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin, members of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, workers from a women's NGO and the owners of a self-sufficient eco-house outside of Chennai.

Valerie said that she was struck by India's joie de vivre. "Amidst all this truly crushing poverty, you see smiles everywhere. You see a commitment to education, to improving the environment, to supporting friends and loved ones. There's definitely a strong sense of will, pride and determination that you see here."

Valerie added that she was extremely impressed with the strong family unit in India, and lamented that the same couldn't be said for America's inner cities. "That support system, of having the family right there, is very valuable. There are many single mothers trying to raise children in our inner cities, and it's really difficult."

2: Its not the right way and the right time to curse these politicians and leaders.Corruption starts at the root level, directly or indirectly we are responsible for this chaos and pathetic situations in India.

Nothing good can happen to this nation untill and unless the citizens themselves take some initiative to work for the well being of the nation. All of us fight for our fundamental rights but had we ever tried to know what are our fundamental duties. We are always enthusiastic to curse these politicians but at the time of elections, are the most lethargic beings of this world. We take everything from our motherland but when time comes to serve her we are totally lured by the ostentatious personality of a NRI.

History is evidence in itself that great revolutions and renaisaance started at the grassroot level, initiated by 2 and 3 people.!

Its easy to post comments here but very difficult to put our words into actions.

JAGO INDIA JAGO.!

4: Every body criticised politicians. Good to c that there are people who think for future of india. But i doubt how many of you are acting for future of india. How many of you use the ONLY power u have, VOTE? Politicians are really intellegent as they are making Educated Indian Youth as fools. They are highly succuessfull in this. You will not believe. If u fool an Highly Educated person then u r intellegent. Many of you said that politicians are very good at family planning, personal economy planning etc. wont you do that in ur dialy life. everybody does it, but it depends on the scope you have. U do some thing to country then blame politicians. Don't forget the fact that they are one among us. I believe everybody of us was never suggested by parents to take politics as a carrier. We lack UNITY. This is the major advantage of politicians to do what they want, in which ever way they want.

Think about it. UNITY

6:Madam ! The US delegation must have met our extra-ordinary and street-smart politicians like Laa(loo) , Mu(lla)Yam , (creator of)MayaVati, (ever) Amar Singh in U.P. and found themselves on a slippery ground on every issue they would have discussed with such jamboree of politicians ! That , prhaps, is why they admit that the Indian politicians are "intelligent" ! Let the members of the delegation run U.P "sarkaar" only for a month and they will end up in mental asaylum ! Three cheers for Indian Democracy ! Zindabad ! Mera Bharat Mahaan ( "Dhoonde Kahaan Kahaan !)Jai Hind !

7: Think if you were a politician and you have to make contact with 10 lakh people of your constituency. If it will require 10 lakh rupees (minimum), who can gamble for such a big amount by earning money from true means. Now gone the days when a large number of people were ready to donate not only time but money for political parties. Now politicians hire people for canvassing. In fact system is corrupt. We can blame politicians for not raising voice against such a corrupt system. This system suits to corrupt people. Honest people do not know the solution.

9:Yes, indeed , Arpita ! Who is responsible for the 1.4 trillion US dollars stashed in Swiss Bank secret accounts ? That is outside India but within India too we have a Koda with over a billion rupees with him and there was Telgi of fake stamp-paper fame having another billion still in his pocket ! If these are the "tips of the iceberg", as they say, then how gigantic must be the iceberg within the country ? Surely much bigger than the "Swiss Money" ? Jai Hind !

on the basis that just because of our politician`s "BLACK MONEY" the condition of "INDIA" during Recession is Not as Bad as Others...

23: Indeed Indian Politicians are intelligent. More than a billion populated country has not much effected by the present global crisis is the best example og sn efficient govt. Even the bad politicians are also forced to deliver the goods because of the strong opposition in our Parliament & Assembly. V have the best democratical electoral system that unsuccessful politicians are thrown out during the election. It is not easy to govern a country like India where hundreds of relegion with hundreds of languages spoken having thousands of different ideologies are practiced. Do not forget we the mejority of highly educated, honest and intelligent politicians like Manmohan singh, Chidambaram, Prnab Mukherjee, Kamalnath, Kapil sibal, SM Krishna, Antony, and so many more in the govt and many more very sincere matured politicians in the opposition in BJP and other parties. Corrupt politicians are there in all othe countries also, and we may have some of the best with high marks comparing to others as we are the best in every field compared to other developing countries of the world.

43: Of course, in India, a politician has to survive in a mammoth mass of humanity leading to cut throat competition. This makes survival extremely difficult but once onesurvives, the fruits are assured. In the whole game of survival, our politicians become the best in the world as they are regularly grinded by the opposition. in fact, the credit of making best politicians goes to our opposition, which organizes demonstrations, dharma, bandh calls, hijacking, mar-peet, lootpat and what not and the phase reversal is in the hands of our intelligent public, which sees that the power transfers from one hand to another after every election. After all, we are 1.2 billion people.
Posted by: Dr H N Dutta - 16 Nov, 2009

44:Oh Dattaji ! Why highlight the (mis)deeds of the opposition only ? Isn't a span of first 50 years of the (unopposed)ruling party enough to show good results in terms of better living standards for Indians ? "Our problems are huge" cannot be the defence ! Our "Pyare" Jawahar's "Command Economy" 5-year Plans have not yielded better results should be admitted in public instead of hiding the facts behind the smoke-screen of "It all started with Rajiv Gandhi" ! Why not admit the fact that in 1990 our Foreign Exchange was "dabba gole" and so Narsimha and SMS ( Sardar Manmohan Singh) had no other choice but to reverse the gears ? Isn't admitting a mistake a part of democracy ? Instead of admitting ones faults our "khadiwallahs" use the oft-repeated arguement that all the ills are because of 10 years "Saffron Raj" and not because of Jawahar's 50 years mistake ! No wonder the US delegates found our politicians so smart ( intelligent ? ) ! Jai Hind !

In India, whosoever comes in power has to play a different role and whosoever comes in opposition has to play another set role. Please remember it is the difficulties, obstacles, problems, hurdles etc which make a man perfect and it is these problems which make our politicians perfect and smart to be even recognized by US delegates.I never thought that someone would read and comment on my words and for that matter,I sincerely thank U

Pls remember ‘ you get leaders you deserve’ If you think our leaders are the worst choice you can make, why don’t you enter into politics and make it better. We cannot do that. We cannot give up our jobs, We are not ready to be thrown to the uncertainties of early years of a politician. We cannot give up our A/C rooms. We cannot accept the insecurity as a budding politician. So we all intelligent people work for corporates. Not so intelligent people enter onto politics.

71:Vow ! Human beings are human beings everywhere but in some places they are more prone to curruption ( at all levels ) and , unfortunately , India is one of those places on this earth ! "Unity of Purpose" is another another difficulty in India with its so called "Unity in Diversity" ! "Left-of-centre" mentality is another inherent weakness with us and finally lesser belief in Science is a big handicap ! There has been "Wealth Creation" in India for the last 62 years but its appropriate distribution is not there ! On paper Law & Order is there but in the field it does not serve its purpose well ! There is huge past glory of human philosophy but it is not at all workable to get two square meals a day ! There is a "copy book" neatly written democracy in the form of a constitution but it is being mis-used by street-level politicians ! And so on and so forth ! Way back in fifties our "Pyare" Jawaharlal Nehru promised the nation that the "command economy" principles of communism will make India an economic juggarnaut by the year 2000 and now the date has been postponed to 2050 ! The members of the U.S. delegation must not have scratched even the surface of our political couldron but they seem to be satisfied with the fact that in the vast geographical area of Asia at least there is one "paper democracy" working for the last 62 years and chugging along like a "rolling stone gathering moss" ! After all USA is bent upon "imposing" their way of "democracy" on to Iraq and Afganistan ! Who knows thwy may "outsource" that work too to Indian politicians soon ! Jai Hind !
