SRIHARIKOTA: India Friday successfully launched its heaviest satellite yet using a polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) from this coastal launch facility of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The four-stage PSLV-C5 zoomed into the sky in inclement weather at 10.45 am and injected the 1,360-kg Resourcesat-1 into space 828 km above the earth after 18 minutes. It is the heaviest remote-sensing satellite developed by the ISRO. ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair, who witnessed the launch with senior ISRO scientists, described the successful launch as a "tremendous achievement." "The successful flight of the PSLV, which has put the Resroucesat-I into orbit, is a tremendous achievement as far as the nation is concerned," he said.
