NEW DELHI: Indian lamps are set to twinkle and blaze in the Middle East, with brassware exporter Salar Overseas opening a manufacturing unit in Dubai. The company, based in the hub of brassware units at Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, is setting up base in Dubai's Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ). The 120-million company has acquired a warehouse in JAFZ to begin trading operations this month, even as it firms up plans to set up a manufacturing unit within six months in JAFZ. "We will take possession of the warehouse this week to start trading operations within the Gulf region," J.C. Sharma, management representative of the company, said. "Later on we want to set up a manufacturing unit for our special brass lamps, artware and metal handicrafts." The move is expected to enhance the presence of Indian brassware in the Middle East. Owned by Hafiz Mohammed Muslim, the company plans to invest around 30 million initially. "The investment will go up as we embark on our manufacturing operations. We are planning to make mostly exclusive lamp units for both floor and table lamps for the Middle East and neighbouring markets," said Sharma. Certified by the U.S. Underwriters Laboratories, Salar lamps are standardised to be acceptable anywhere in the world, said Sharma. Exporting mostly to the U.S., Britain, France, Canada and Japan, Salar Overseas has been accorded recognition by the International Labour Organisation for being a model small-scale unit in Moradabad. The company has started a new line of steel lamps in India for exports. It will use JAFZ as a base to diversify into other metals like aluminium and iron. Brassware is an important product in India's annual export basket of handicrafts, at 60 billion. Of around 2,350 trading, manufacturing and services companies operating in JAFZ, over 300 are from India, including Reliance Industries and Dabur.
