NEW DELHI: The apex software industry bodies of India and the US Wednesday decided to expand their cooperation in cyber security into a broader multinational effort. The decision was incorporated in an agreement between India's National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) and the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), officials said. Nasscom president Kiran Karnik and ITAA president Harris Miller inked the agreement, called the Delhi Declaration. It promised cooperation between the two countries' industries to promote a culture of security "within and across enterprises, including corporate governance, integration of physical and cyber security and cyber ethics from school to office". Miller told reporters the agreement was not aimed at introducing "over regulation" of industries, but spreading the awareness that better cyber security practices were in the interest of the industries. "Cyber security should not be looked at as a nuisance," he said. Jerry Rao, Nasscom chairperson, said adoption of international best practices was important for India because of its large business process outsourcing industry. "Cyber security should be viewed by industry as something as essential as oxygen is to survival," he said. The stress, Rao said, should be on evolving an "ecology of security" that would cover all aspects of operations of the industry. He said Nasscom has identified six areas where India's cyber security laws needed toning up but did not give details.
