Indian Science lab key to future: GM

BANGALORE: WorldÂ’s biggest carmaker, General Motors has recognized its Indian Science Laboratory (ISL) as a key innovator, invaluable for the future growth of the company. The India Science Lab, the only GM R&D facility outside North America, had already gained recognition GM Vice President for R and D and Strategic Planning Lawrence D Burns today said. GM Executive Director (R & D) Dr Alan Taub said that the Indian Lab was growing as per the plans and the company will exceed the initial first phase investment of around $20 million. Currently it had 75 scientists in its rolls and the number was expected to cross 80 by year-end and 100 by 2006 end. Taub said the Indian Lab proved to be an invaluable center of Excellence and its importance was growing significantly within the organization. Burns said the Lab was not seen as a cost cutting measure, but to maainly use the huge scientific and engineering talent pool available in India. Dr Taub said some of the engineers recruited in the country with little knowledge on automotive sector, have turned experts in a short span of time.
