CHANDIGARH: Punjab is aggressively wooing its expatriates settled abroad, inviting them to invest in their native state and promising fast track courts for speedy disposal of their lawsuits at home.
Chief Minister Amrinder Singh told a delegation of 40 non-resident Indians (NRIs) of Punjabi origin from the U.S., Canada and Britain that he had, after hearing the grievances of expatriates, decided to ask the chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to set up fast track courts to hear their cases.
The intention, he said, was to let NRIs know that their lives and property were secure in their home state.
Singh said he was anguished to learn that many NRIs had lost their properties to land sharks and even their own relatives who took advantage of legal lacunae and the lengthy judicial process.
The chief minister also appealed to NRIs to invest in Punjab and provide it with technical know-how, especially in IT, biotechnology, agro-processing and power.
"NRIs keen to invest in Punjab would not face any sort of harassment at the hands of bureaucracy and on account of red tape," Singh said.
He said his government has introduced radical reforms to dispose of within 48 hours pending proposals from NRIs on industrial projects they intend to set up in Punjab.
The delegation which visited Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar, besides Chandigarh promised to invest up to $100 million in various ventures, including hydroelectric power, health, education and tourism.
