Indian IT firms to get five Alcatel-Lucent contracts
Bangalore: As many companies have shown the interest of entering Indian rural market in the last few years, French telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent also is following the same path and decided to offer five contracts to Indian companies. All the MNCs have understood the emergence of India as a global market. The revenue of India grew at over 50 percent over the past couple of years. A large part of this has come from its presence in the fibre optic space. Alcatel-Lucent feels that growth in this space is also set to soar. Vivek Mohan, Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent India said, "Fibre optic has grown by five percent last year. But globally, considering our presence in fibre optic, we think in India we will achieve 10-15 percent." The company is learnt to award five contracts worth between $50-100 million to Indian firms in starting of the next fiscal. Some of the IT companies, who are expected be the contenders, are Wipro, Mphasis, Sasken and Tech Mahindra. Mohan said, "Well, I can't go into any specifics but we will hand out contracts for different pieces of work and different services in India over next fiscal." Nearly, the company aims to bag a substantial chunk of a $2 billion contracts to build a 40,000 km alternate communication network for the defence forces. Alcate-Lucent feels that government contracts, particularly in defence, are on the rise and expected to triple to over 15 percent of overall revenues very soon. To meet this growth, the company plans to hire close to 5,000 people in India alone over the next fiscal.
