Indian Engineer honored for technological innovation

Bangalore: Sampathkumar Veeraraghavan, of Chennai has been honored as the 'new face of engineering', by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) USA 2011, during National Engineer Week for developing technological solutions. The 'New Faces of Engineering' was started to promote the accomplishments of fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. This is to highlight their academic success and student contributions to the industry and sponsoring society.

He did his bachelors from Anna university,Chennai in 2005 and did his masters form Tufts University, Medford(USA) and graduted in 2011. He has has been involved in developing technological aids for people with disabilities. Veeraraghavan's achievements include being the Founder and Director of the Brahmam Research Group based in Chennai India. He has developed several technology based solutions in addressing global humanitarian issues for children with disabilities, women and students below poverty lines in India.

Sampathkumar, who has bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering and a group of medical professionals developed the 'Automated Screening System for Developmental Disorders', which is a 30-minute screening procedure that can help to detect the autism in children when they are just 18 months. With this innovative system he has been able to help many kids across the country.

The solution was created to help the lives of disabled and poor women and children in India. Moreover he was one of 14 engineers recognized for this international honor and featured in a full-page ad in 'USA Today on 21 February, 2011. 'After completing the Master's degree, he worked work as a component design engineer for Intel Corporation, in Hudson, Massachusetts.

Apart from that, Veeraraghavan has received many awards from IEEE and other organizations for his humanitarian work. He received an IEEE Achievement Award from the Member Geographic Activities (MGA) Board "for outstanding leadership and contributions toward the development and implementation of IEEE humanitarian projects. The project connects IEEE members and geographic units in India. Moreover he has also received two other IEEE awards that is 'Outstanding Student Humanitarian Prize' and a 'People's Choice Prize'.

Sampathkumar has also created the first online database in India, titled the Information System for Human and Health Services (ISHHS) is currently being used in Tamil Nadu. This system is to collect and analyze information on the physically and mentally disabled. This system helps to minimize the gap between urban and rural areas, in terms of medical resources available to women and children.
