Fremont: Divakaruni's book 'One Amazing Thing' was selected by the organizers for the regional initiative named 'One Book, One City- Gulf Coast Reads: On the Same Page'. The libraries and literacy organizations in the Greater Houston area chose Chitra Divakaruni's book to kick off an initiative last month to encourage the public to read more. She talks about how diverse people come together in times of crisis to realize their lives are rich and not so different. The reason why this book was selected was because it highlights that culturally diverse people can come together during their collective struggle to overcome adversity. The novel proves the transcendent power of stories and the meaningfulness of human expression itself. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author, poet and teacher. Her themes include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magical realism and diversity. Her books have been translated into 29 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films.
