India will not buy farm lands overseas

New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Wednesday ruled out India going overseas to buy farm lands as China does in Africa and Latin America. "We are a little cautious about it. The government doesn't want to go (overseas to buy land)," Pawar told the Economic Editors' Conference here. He, however, said any Indian national could go and buy land overseas for agriculture and stated that the government had no objection to facilitate it. Asked whether there will be any talks between India and the U.S. on agriculture when President Barack Obama visits the country, Pawar said he was not aware of it. "Till today I don't know," Pawar said and added that usually the prime minister constitutes a team if any talks with high profile visiting state head were to be held.
