NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today hinted at large-scale investment in rural India and the creation of a human resource base to bridge the urban-rural divide and make the growth process inclusive. "There was need for large-scale investment in rural India and creation of human resource base," he said emphasizing the need for encouraging environmentally sustainable growth to absorb surplus manpower. Speaking to students from Columbia, Wharton and Stanford universities, he said growth alone was not sufficient to alleviate poverty and that there was need to bridge the divide between urban and rural India. He said India’s future lay in integrating its economy with the global economy and the process of economic liberalization has helped the Indian economy to become much more open and unleash creativity among Indian entrepreneurs. This liberalization has also helped in bringing down tariff rates drastically, he said.
