NEW DELHI: Two new nodes of National Internet Exchange of India will be set up in Bangalore and Hyderabad. "There are four nodes of NIXI in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Two new nodes are likely to come up in Bangalore and Hyderabad," director in IT Ministry, Govind, told PTI. "More nodes will be set up depending on the demand," he said, adding at present 25 ISPs are connected to NIXI and the number was expected to go up. NIXI allows all Internet Service Providers in India to interconnect at a single physical location. This saves costs as ISPs do not have to establish dedicated links to data centres of all ISPs and Internet traffic from users in India does not have to travel outside the country for accessing local content. After the establishment of NIXI, the Government is now planning to bring data centres to India. "Private players have to take an initiative for that and talks are going on in this regard," Govind said at a roundtable conference on broadband. He said the number of Internet users in India is 25 million and there was a need to increase the Internet penetration by making it more affordable. While the debate centered around whether more applications will drive internet in India or more connections will drive applications, Govind said Government would support private players who come up with applications that suit the country's needs.
