NEW DELHI: India Thursday approved the setting up of two information technology (IT) institutes at a cost of over 500 million each to cater to manufacturing units. The two Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing will be set up at Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. To be set up with an investment of 503.7 million each, each institute would admit 1,200 students and have a faculty of 120. They would provide a strong interface with other academic and research institutions, Swaraj said. The two IT institutes would offer bachelor's degrees in mechanical, electrical and computer science engineering. They would offer a master's degree in design engineering or manufacturing, she said.
