India to promote biotechnology in Asia

HYDERABAD: Ten Asian countries led by India today formed ‘Federation of Asian Biotech Associations’ to promote biotechnology in the region. The Federation was launched at BioAsia 2005, a three-day bio-business summit that began here Thursday. ‘The federation will lead to regional cooperation in biotechnology and help Asian countries make advances in the sector,’ said Anwar Nasim, head of Pakistan's National Commission on Biotechnology and founder president of FABA. FABA's members include India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Israel, Iran and Saudi Arabia. The association will have its secretariat in Hyderabad and will help in promoting biotechnology both as a science and business. The federation is also planning to rope in China at a later stage.
