India to invest in nano-technology

KOCHI: Eminent scientist C.N Rao expressed that India is likely to invest $ 220 million in the next two to three years on nano-technology.
Rao, who is also chief scientific adviser to Indias Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said this while inaugurating the Amrita center for Nano-sciences (ACNS) for tissue engineering and stem cell research at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. He added that China has made the biggest inputs in nano-science, US comes third while India is far behind.
In 2006, the Japanese government's investment in the field was $1.30 billon while private investments amounted to three billion dollars according to a national english daily.
Unveiling the plaque, Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajashekaran said modern day expectations from science and technology were immense. Science and technology was an important vehicle for growth and development, he said.
This is the first nano-technology center for tissue engineering and stem cell research funded by the government of India.
The center is doing pioneering work in developing natural tissues and organs without using synthetic implants or searching for donors. The center, its director Shanti Nair said, will also develop new nano-materials for application in energy storage and generation.
