New Delhi: The Indian government is likely to introduce a bill proposing to form the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) in the budget session of parliament next year. "A group of ministers (GOM) has sorted out certain issues regarding defence airfields paving the way for the bill to be tabled in parliament," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in his inaugural address at 'Aerodrome India 2006' on Thursday. The government had also decided to upgrade facilities and improve traffic at 70 airports in the country where air traffic was extremely low, the minister said. "The government wants a greater number of flights and activity at the airports where many airlines are still reluctant to fly," he added. There was a need for greater investment in the airport infrastructure to deal with the problems of traffic congestion and improve quality of services in the aviation sector, Patel said. 'Aerodrome India 2006' is a three-day international exhibition covering areas like airport infrastructure, safety and security, airport operations, airspace management and airport environment. Over 120 exhibitors representing 18 countries are participating. Some of the leading companies in the airport industry such as Honeywell, Siemens, SITA, ELTA (Israel), Meinhardt, Thales, ETA Melco, Tyco, Crawford Doors, W.H. Brady, Webb India, ECIL, Cargo Service Center are among them.
