India to get its first ATMP plant

BANGALORE: SemIndia, a consortium of Indian and international investors will soon start the first semiconductor assembly-test-mark-pack (ATMP) plant in India.
This project is the first in the series of SemIndias plans to have a complete semiconductor manufacturing facility in India. AMD, one of the partners of SemIndia will get to augment its regional assembly and test needs.
"The AMTP facility is the first logical step in our vision to make India a semicondcutor manufacturing destination," said Vinod K. Aggarwal, chairman, president and CEO of SemIndia said in a press release.
The location for the fabrication facility is yet to be decided. Three places are being discussed and the decision to locate it will be announced this month. The AMTP will also be located in the chosen location.
AMDs growing number of partners and customers will have access to leading technology solutions with a Made in India content with the fabrication and AMTP facility, said Ajay Marathe, president, AMD India.
"Setting up an ATMP facility in India is a logical first step towards semiconductor manufacturing in the country, and we welcome this initiative by SemIndia", said Rajendra Khare, Chairman of India Semiconductor Association (ISA). "Wafer manufacturing is the core of hardware industry and must be the highest priority."
