India the Largest Milk Producing Country: NDDB

Bangalore: The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has revealed in an annual report for 2010-11 that India continues to be the largest milk producer. The estimated milk production for 2010-11 is 121 million tonnes. This means that the country has almost reached 17 percent of world milk production.

In the year 2010, milk production stood at 112 million tonnes. Over the past year, there has been a significant increase in world milk production by 1.6 percent, which is an increase by 710 million tonnes. When compared to the previous year, it was found that co-operatives in the dairy industry collected 9.6 million tonnes of milk, which has a growth by 1 percent. Over the past year dairy co-operatives have engaged in marketing liquid milk leading to a growth rate of 4 percent.

In the previous year it was 7.9 million tonnes, while during the period of 2010-2011, the proportion of the volume of milk has increased to reach around 8.2 million tones.

National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has revealed a National Dairy Plan (NDP) with a 15 year horizon, the first phase is to be implemented by early 2012.The National Dairy Plan (NDP) is a multi-state co-operative society’s plan which has come up with an investment of around 2000 crore and aims at increasing milk production involving new scientific methods.

 For a subsequent increase in domestic milk production, the estimated investment is around 17,300 crore.

NDDB chairman Dr Amrita Patel said “NDP I has been appraised by the World Bank and approval for the project is expected shortly."

The project proposal has to be carried out by End Implementing Agencies (EIAs) including State Cooperative Dairy Federations, District Cooperative Milk Producers Unions,  Producer Companies and State Livestock development Boards. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), an affiliate of the World Bank, has also laid hands in exploring additional finances to accrue profit from commercial activities such as plants for milk processing, manufacturing cattle feed production plants.
