BANGALORE: Information on employees in India's massive outsourcing industry will be compiled in a central database in a bid to prevent criminals from getting jobs in the sector and threatening the data security of global companies, Nasscom said. "We will soon evolve a framework to enable companies to hire third parties and do background checks on potential employees," said Kiran Karnik, president of National Association of Software and Services Companies. Scores of Western firms farm out office functions such as telemarketing, call center operations, payroll accounting, and credit card processing to companies in countries such as India, where wages are low and skilled professionals are abundant. The announcement follows several reports of data theft and bank fraud by Indian call center employees. In the most notable case, police in April arrested three former call center employees and nine of their associates in the western city of Pune on charges that they misused financial data and illegally withdrew money from the accounts of New York based Citibank customers. The chairman of that call center firm, Mphasis BPO, said the proposed database would make it easy for companies to hire accredited workers and minimize risks of fraud. "We found that some customers liked to share personal information with our employees. For somebody who wants to misuse such information, it is possible to do so," Jerry Rao said.
