India plans automobile hubs, testing facility

NEW DELHI: India plans to set up three automobile hubs in different regions and a 
550 million testing facility for tractors and other automobiles near Nagpur in Maharashtra.
With India fast emerging as a global hub for manufacture of passenger cars, it plans "to initiate a special 17 billion project to provide world-class facilities to accelerate the development of the auto sector", Minister of Heavy Industries Subodh Mohite said here Thursday.
The project would involve setting up three automobile facilities - one in the south, another near Gurgaon in Haryana for the northern region and a third in Madhya Pradesh.
"Simultaneously, it is proposed to upgrade the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which is already recognised as an institution of international standard.
"The auto-testing project near Nagpur, which has just been cleared, will come up under the aegis of ARAI," Mohite said.
"The project near Nagpur will be developed as a hub for IT-based design and development in the auto sector and thus would benefit not only India but the entire South East Asian region."
The cost of the Nagpur project, mooted by the Vidarbha Jan Kalyan Sanstha and the Vidarbha Industries Association, will be borne by the central government while the state government will provide land.
Besides, the project is expected to generate substantial employment for both technical and non-technical staff, Mohite said.
