India planning 200 million phone connections

PATNA: India plans to more than double its landline and mobile phone connections to 200 million in the next three years. "We hope to release 200 million telephone and mobile connections in India by 2007," Minister of State for Communication and IT Shakeel Ahmad told IANS here Thursday. Ahmad said right now there are only 85 million landline and mobile phone connections in India. "We have to provide more telephone and mobile connections to people, particularly in rural areas, to fulfil the dream of late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi," he said.
