BANGALORE: India has managed to slip out of the list of 20 countries with the highest instances of software piracy, though there has been a 1 percent increase in the piracy rate. With 74 percent of the software sold being illegitimate, the software industry’s losses in India have climbed up from $367 million in 2003, when piracy was at 73 percent to $519 million in 2004 and is very much in the list on the list of countries that have suffered losses of over $100 million due to piracy. The just released data from the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and IDC global software piracy study, has found that with over 279 million Internet users in Asia-Pacific, online piracy is a major policy threat. Auction sites, China based warez group, spam and B2B systems are aiding download, copying and distribution.
