CHENNAI: India must focus on developing state-of-the-art packaging technologies to boost exports and the domestic food processing industry, said experts Saturday. India's packaging industry, estimated to be worth 300 billion, has not adapted itself to rapid changes taking place globally in this space, they noted. "India is still 15 years behind in technology usage in the packaging industry," Rajiv Dhar, director of the Indian Institute of Packaging, told a seminar organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry. Robert Steemers of Britain-based packaging firm Rapak said India could greatly boost exports of processed foods by improving packaging standards. "As much as 35 percent of fruits and vegetables, out of the entire gamut of foods produced in India, go waste annually. Only one percent of it is processed," he said. "In countries like Thailand, as much as 70 percent is processed for export," he said, adding his firm was looking at the possibility of supplying 1,000 litre containers to the Indian market. "In today's global environment, countries like India need to look at the export market in a big way and add value to its produce," said Steemers.
