India mulling to set up secure network worth 450 crores

Bangalore: The Indian government is making an attempt to provide a secure internet network across the country. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is considering investing a whooping amount of Rupees 450 crores to have safe and secure infrastructure for communication networks (telecom and internet) which will be exclusively for government use.

Currently many internet users in the country who use services like email and Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP, a technology for making telephone calls over the Internet) depend on Foreign Service providers like Gmail, Yahoo mail and Skype whose servers are located outside the country. Communication made using these services are presumed to be secure from hackers, miscreants and other anti-social elements  as these services use proprietary encryptions but, the government of those counters where the servers are located can access to messages communicated across using the services.

"To develop and deploy a pan-India secure network and network-based services such as e-mail, voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP), mobile communication through a survivable and available network architecture for secured communication for government use with a government funding of Rs 450 crore.” As per the latest report by the Department of Telecommunications.

For high security of classified government communication, secured communication network is proposed to be established for fixed and wireless communication at an estimated capital cost of Rs 300 crore. Further, Rs 100 crore for five years are proposed to be earmarked for operational expenditure and Rs 50 crore for Research and Development reports NDTV profit.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Limited (MTNL) have come up to take this project and will receive reimbursement of the expenses they incur for building this secure communication.
