DUBAI: India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can boost economic and trade ties by harnessing each other's potentials in new economy sectors like information and communications technology (ICT). This was decided after Indian External Affairs Minister Yaswant Sinha met officials of the Dubai Internet and Media City during his stopover here on his way from the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Discussions focused on ways to boost cooperation between the ICT and media industries in India and the UAE. Ahmad Bin Bayat, director-general of the Dubai technology, e-commerce and media Free Zone, said: "India is one of the key target markets for Dubai media and Internet city. We share a special relationship with the Indian ICT and media industries." Bayat, who made a presentation to Sinha, added: "There are several synergies that can be harnessed through partnerships between the new economy sectors in the two regions." Sinha said he was impressed by the Dubai government's initiatives to boost "the development of the knowledge economy in the region". The projects in the free zones serve as a model for other developing countries, he said. "The ICT and media industries in India are keen to participate in these projects. I am sure such participation will enhance the already strong economic and trade relations between India and the UAE." Earlier, a huge Indian community here hosted a reception for Sinha, who said that India was considering granting dual citizenship to people of Indian origin.
