India is sixth largest energy consumer

NEW DELHI: India is the sixth among the top ten world electricity markets in the world, Power Minister P M Sayeed has said. Sayeed said that in terms of per capita consumption of electricity, India's rank is quite low in comparison to other developed and developing countries. The per capita annual consumption of electricity in the country was 592 KwH during 2003-04. The U.S. tops the list with 13228 KwH followed by Australia 10502 and France with 7366. He said a capacity addition of 41,110 MW has been targeted for the 10th Five Year Plan. There has been an increase in Plant Load Factor and an early stabilization of newly commissioned units. There has been renovation, modernization and life extension of old and inefficient generating units with interest subsidy on loans by the Power Finance Corporation.
