India is helping Mauritius set up a cyber city and is looking at the island nation as a springboard to the American, European and African markets.

PRETORIA: "Indian business is looking at Mauritius as some kind of springboard, both for African as well as for the European market and for the U.S. market," Indian External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha told IANS on his arrival from Mauritius for the Joint Commission meeting. "We are very closely involved with the development of Mauritius. We are setting up a cyber city for which we have extended to Mauritius a credit line of $100 million. The cyber city will house the (Indian) software technology partners." "With Mauritius, as with South Africa, we have a very special relationship. We discussed once again in Mauritius a wide range of issues with the leadership there. "We are doing a lot of things already and have made some offers to the Mauritius government for newer projects that they will consider and get back to us on. "We have apart from close cultural and civilization links with Mauritius, a lot going in the economic field. "Clearly there is tremendous scope. They have their export-processing zone, which should be attractive. We are trying to involve Indian and Mauritian business." About 70 percent of the island nation's one million population is of Indian origin.
