India gives Senegal $15 million for rural enterprises

NEW DELHI: India has extended $15 million credit to Senegal to enable it to develop small and medium enterprises in rural areas and to purchase agricultural machinery and equipment. India would also provide a grant for conducting a feasibility study and preparing a project report for the Dakar-Ziguinchor railway line, said a joint statement issued Tuesday at the conclusion of Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade's visit to India. India has agreed to extend the scope of the ongoing Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme and would consider deputing experts in key areas, the statement said. The two countries also agreed to expedite discussions on an agreement to avoid double taxation and will sign an agreement on promoting and protecting investments, it said. During his visit, Wade held discussions with President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Vice President Bhairon Shekhawat and External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha too called on Wade. Wade invited Kalam and Vajpayee to visit Senegal and the dates for these would be worked out through diplomatic channels, the statement said.
