28: If one cares to read the report more carefully and without any bias whatsoever, Mr. Murthy never said in this meeting that Infosys is an innovator. When he is talking about Indian companies' need for innovation at par with global companies in other parts of the world, I think that he is including his company as well. Let us try not to assume that he is keeping his company on a pedestal and is looking down on other Indian companies. We need to be more fair in our criticism.

Today an average person has lost faith in the legislature, executive and the judiciary. There is apathy in abundance. Big Companies not even on dividend list pay mind-blowing salaries to their top executives - an example in sight is Bharati Airtel. The Company paid maid dividend at a meagre 20%. However, Suneel Mittal draws and has been drawing nearly 20 Cr salary per annum! What a hypocracy! What a shame! Suneel Mittal is Suneel Mittal because of shareholders of Bharati Airtel who pumped in their life savings into the Company but got no return till the maiden dividend this year at meagre 20%.

Then we had persons like Ramalinga Raju who defrauded the Company 'SATYAM' beyond one's imaginations! I wonder why he named the Company 'Satyam'.

This is regarding the corporate sector. The legislature is not way behind but way ahead. Today the funds marked for the poor farmers or the needy do not reach them.

Executive frauds are well known.

Judiciary too is not untouched. The CJI was on record to say 20% of judiciary is corrupt. I think it was an understatement. If judges have nothing to hide why the CJI was opposing discosure of Judges Assets.

We take pride in saying we are 70th or 74th most corrupt nation from the bottom!

64: First of all, people should avoid personal bashing or rude language on a public forum.

Possibly we Indians have an inherent tendency of leg-pulling or unnecessary criticism of persons who are on high pedestal relatively. How many of us have the courage like him of starting a venture with mere Rs. 10,000/- and then converting it into a mammoth that employs over 1,00,000 people and running it with the same ethics as those in the beginning. Why do we always highlight some baseless allegations or argument about the personalities like Murthy and Gates. Can't we take them as personalities that have set certain milestones to be catched up by some other promising ones. They may have indulged into some typical business practices that may not appeal to some, but that doesn't degrade their achievement of being an entrepreneur.

I do agree with the fact that Indian IT industry doesn't has iconic products in the market. But there are some hard facts to swallow:

1. From the very beginning, IT business in India has been service and consultancy based.
2. Very late recognition as a industry by Govt.
3. Indian IT industry is relatively new compared to west and U.S..
4. Less attention to cutting-edge research in academia, specially in technical fields. Indeed, our over all education system from primary to higher is in need of a complete overhaul. So, companies have a very limited pool of skilled technocrats to choose from.
5. Capital crunch in research areas.

But that does not mean, Innovation does not happen in India. There are no. of people in this large country that have the capability to establish high standards of innovation (I won't quote any example here, they are many.). The requirement is we should have positive attitude, proper infrastructure to nurture promising talents and state-of-the art academic system for the entire population, strong industry-academic partnership and above all confidence in ourselves to achieve extreme goals.

Large companies can afford to spend money on innovation. That's different matter how many of large companies allocate fund for R&D.

But many immerging small companies may not afford to do this even if they want to do. If big players join their hand and allocate funds, it would be great help for such hidden talent and ideas. I am sure India can make its place and contribute in innovation by doing this.

It is the second part where we are lacking. Its not that we aren't capable of doing it. We have always done it. But we need to improvise and make more of such high impact innovations. 96: Enterprises are in a race to make more and more money hence the focus is not on innovation rather to quickly deliver what customers need to make sure that, there is constant revenue stream.
As we know, we have lot more technology available, which can be readily implemented across, but lack of awareness and co-operation/coordination hamper the need to innovate or to implement, what is already available.

On top of it, our marketing skills need to be re-looked at, rather need an overhaul.

Innovation means anything that when applied results and translates to efficiency in the business life cycle of a company ,and definitely both Infosys and TCS have done to that Fortune 500 companies world wide infact TCS has served some of the critical clinets in U.K ,Japan and U.S.A and the same with Infosys as well
Yes to create something from scratch ISRO is a good example
the avionics for LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) are an example,
Chandrayan is a good example ,Nano is another one too .
To do more first our companies need to accumulate the bottomline ,a nation has to gain its confidence,yes slowly we are getting there and a lot more need to be done and yes we can only do it with good teams and by a single person here and there ..
I call upon all Indians to come together and leave all regional differences and make Pandit Jawahar Lal nehru's dream and as per Dr Apj Abdul kalam's dream to contribute and create value .

Yes Only constant innovation is mantra in this globalized world.Jeff Immelt the CEO of GE predicts that Innovations happening in india targeting the Rural masses will shape the world markets I think he is right and hope so truly..
For this to happen our I.I.T'S ,TIFR(Tata Institute of Fundamental Research),IISC with industry needs to come together .
Good Exmaples:1.ISRO and Tata motors collobaration to produce Hydrogen fuelled car.
2.chetan mani's REVA electric car.
while ISRO'S chandrayan has captured national confidence and inspired our youth to join this esteemed organisation,it proves that even govt run companies are quite good in achieving the targets,another case is BHEL which is doing quite good .
while in the same token we have AIR India that does not seem to get it right.
I think TCS,WIPRO,INFOSYS should pool a bit of their profits in establishing satellite venture funds in partnership with the academia (from iits ,iims,iiscs ,deemed universities like ANNA UNIVERSITY ,DELHI UNIVERSITY,REC's etc).The aim of these satellite venture fund comapnies should be to reach out the rural masses with innovative products ,once these products find market value ,these innovations can then be target towards external markets like Africa,South America ,ofcourse they need to be best per performance and cost effective.
If India can do this with constant innovation we can sustain our growth ,while service sector has so far supported the GDP it might face competition ,to mitigate this we need to spur constant innovation I compeltly agree with shri Narayan murthy

102: I think we need to look at this from a different perspective:
Irrespective of what Mr.Murthy says, our core competence has been on services(by coincidence and India being a low cost high IQ human capital).
Innovation requires lot of investment on research in the likes of Google.

I'm not sure if our Indian Majors will spend that kind of money on research as they always calculate "operating surplus" and market share and turnover. It is unfortunately a wrong competition in the sense that we compete for samething.

Though we do contribute to "Microprocessors","iphones" and other innovations of the world, we are not seen as destination for research and innovation/ideation.

IT services is becoming a commoditized industry and may not take us far.

104:Srikant: I surely agree with you with respect to the examples you have quoted. But innovation need not always mean an iPHONE. Innovation can be the creative use of wireless technology for directing Forklifts inside the factory premises. Innovation can be the creative use of GPS to create tracking and alert system for trucks in a transportation system. Innovation can mean pushing electronic health records to individual PDAs. Opportunities for innovation are all around us. And most importantly, these resultants products should be India's Intellectual Property. That is progress. But what Mr. Murthy's Infosys and the Big Indian firms do is to follow a revenue model which is glorified body shopping. Services and People. Every piece of work they turn out belongs to a foreign company . India is left with earnings but nothing that is sustainable.

108: His 100,000 plus company's contribution to the field of Computer Science/Software Engineering is a big Zero. He has no right to talk about innovation. Had it not been for the Y2K fiasco, he would have been just another body shopper. If the US government pursues all the Visa violations from the 80s, his company would be bankrupt paying the fines and back taxes. As another reader pointed out, he has become rich at the expense of the comman Indian and American taxpayers. The sad part is people like him have been upgraded to a 'Demi God' status and will never be brought to justice.

112:People who hate/critcize NRN should first think about the state of affairs in India before 1991. No I am not a big fan of Infosys. Before 1991 what is the state of economy or GDP. When u start a industry economy comes first then rest. After the liberalization there is a deluge of oppurtunity and growth. So promptly sensed the opportunity and used it to the full extent. Positioned india on the worldmap strongly. Where is the fault.

You cannot question why he hasn't done this at that time. You cannot expect a child to jump and run before walking. Neverthless there are still some cos which are producing brilliant software here in India may be not visible much. (just google if you want)

what he is saying is Innovation and marketing are strong in US to be adopted here for future growth. For your kind info there are many culprits out there in planet who has bigger brand image than infosys.

116: Working in this industry, I come across many issues which are never addressed. Some of these are:
1. No real document library or methodology - everything is created on the fly after the SOW is signed.
2. Ill-prepared consultants who are chosen at random to man the positions.
3. Lack of cohesive support, once the project gets going.
4. High motivation to take consulting work back to India to keep their own comrades employed and to show individual departmental profitability.
5. Culturally, Indians hate to share. They like to take presentations created by North American and European consultants and reuse them.
6. There is too much infighting within each team. Indians suffer from pride, narcissism, and lack of exposure to the operational aspects of IT. They are just coders.
7. There is no concept of "hardware" or "network" in their retinue.
8. QA is a pie in the sky - the code released is really awful.
9. They have no consistent way to treat their employees. They constantly cut corners by questioning each and every expense and renege on benefits.
10. They think that they can hire a token set of foreign consultants to help them open the door but they treat them like dogs and get rid of them as soon as they feel that they have the account.

These companies are just body shops and in reality are simply using arbitrage pay scale to make a 40% target profit. There is no redeeming qualities apart from a having a captive resource base from which they can throw people at an engagement. The time to recon is now and they will be pushed back to just providing coders. They just don't understand consulting and don't have the innovative IP to go against the big 5. With this global recession, they will probably get pushed back to just being large IT body shops.

120:100 percent agree, made same experiences. Therefore many customers in good old europe shifted away from indian consultants and or companies.
Even if they are used as coders, most of them bad ones, more engaged with their own career than with their customers needs or improvements at their end. It will be interesting to see the downward spiral spinning faster and faster (as there is no remarkable local market in India - which is in contrast to China - and everything in IT economies is outward bound) ...

122: Mr Narayan Murthy one of the most corrupt persons in Modern India claiming of Innovation when his own company practices shitty work left by the Americans. Building Infosys offices in SEZ and getting away easily with tax payers money. Purely a hypocrite who has exploited people to the core by giving meagre salaries and extreme work conditions.

Don't know why people like him are ideolized to such extent. Just like some of our politicians he has taken max advantage of IT talent and exploited it by making them do useless work and offering almost nothing in return.

If InfoSys says so much about innovation what products does it offer in the market? Don't even mention Pinnacle it's like myriad other softwares available today and apart from cheap cost has nothing to offer.

Why doesn't it go on making new products rather than licking american's AXX for shitty work.

There is this great hype about India being the I.T. superpower, but what in the world of I.T. is of Indian ownership? Name one product. Instead, all the companies are primarily engaged in "body shopping" under various guises and glorified terms. The revenue model is still "people" and "services". It is SO SHAMEFUL that we are implementing SAP and Oracle Financials left, right and center in the very heartland of India. In comparison, go to Europe, and see small little companies with their own products and client base. See the focus to "build" something of value that belongs to them, and not just "proudly" become an "SAP expert" and provide services -- valuable as it may be -- which, at the end of the day, leaves behind nothing of value. No innovation. No intellectual property. Nothing of our own. An I.T. paper tiger -- that is India. And the likes of Mr. Murthy are Culprit #1 in hijacking India's "real opportunity" to become a true I.T. superpower.

128:Well, True. No products to name in global arena or no process innovation for us after spending close to three decades in the IT sphere.

Now there are opinions on the journey path. There are strong criticisms. Alternate view points and proverbial evidences. There are better understandings, esoteric nuances of business models and resulting profit/loss accounts of intellecutal properties and opportunities.

I remember such discussions flairing up off campus many times during last few years. As time passes, as a generation hands over the realm to the young and upcoming aspirants, there are many revealations that accompany it.

Discussions are more freequent now and being spotted on different forums on and offline. I believe this may spurt a new pathway for our I T enterprises. It will constantly reflect on the past three decades of journey and may look for new scopes. It will change for the coming times. After all, change happens slowly. What else we can do other than contemplating the global market and India's opportunities to bring innovation and do business in the coming years. But this time a new generation and new set of goals.

132:The change to a creative culture will happen. We need to keep in mind our origins. Our ancient culture had deep emphasis on hierarchal relationships, logic, verbal skills and mathematics. These are linear functions of Th. brain, mainly attributable to the left hemisphere. It makes us learners and appliers of methodologies innovated by others.

Creative people can feel overwhelmed in such an atmosphere. My father was the most innovative person I have ever known. He did things in unconventional ways and as an engineer innovated and built machinery, equipment and such for his factory in a time when none of that was available in India. An Engineering degree was considered more important than the ability to innovate. Even today some of us might think that it is "logical" !

As Indian innovators become well recognized, a new generation will grow up with innovative aspirations. In that sense USA is still a vibrant society (except for many who are still entrenched in old fashioned views)
