UNITED NATIONS: Disappointed over the tardy progress in WTO talks, India has pressed for a clear political direction to break the impasse and deliver on the promise to make the global trading system equitable.
"Progress in the trade negotiations has been disappointing...Time-lines have not been met" to work out modalities on key issues like agriculture, industrial tariffs and services," Indian delegation member R Prabhu said while addressing the UN General Assembly session.
"There has been no significant movement in the post- summer negotiations. Hence, a clear political direction to break the current impasse is a categorical imperative," he said.
Observing that non-tariff barriers cost the developing countries over $100 billion, almost twice the current level of Official Development Assistance, he shared Secretary General Kofi Annan's view that there was need to "un-level" the playing fields in favor of developing countries in order to make the multilateral trading system equitable.
