WASHINGTON: Commerce Minister Kamal Nath has called for a new global trade pact to prevent the U.S. and other countries from banning outsourcing, saying off-shoring promotes mutually beneficial economic growth. Replying to questions after his speech at the U.S. India Business Council (USIBC) here yesterday, the Minister referred to the various anti-outsourcing legislations currently pending before the U.S. Congress and said urgent steps should be taken to ensure that they do not become laws. Nath expressed deep concern over the outcry in certain circles in the U.S. against the outsourcing of jobs to India. "We are very concerned with the current situation because all these noises keep coming and the issue needs to be put behind us once for all," he added. He urged the U.S. to provide more short-term visas to Indian business travelers as part of the New World trade pact. Terming India as the "fastest growing free market democracy," he said the country by 2035 would provide a standard of living to its people comparable to what developed nations enjoyed today. "Our focus then will no longer be so much on fast growth, but rather on sustaining the fabric that enables us to remain a free market in the democracy," the Minister said.
