NEW DELHI: India and Germany will set up a 140 million hi-tech institute at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to boost research in areas like automation, precision manufacturing and IT. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on setting up the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology was signed Wednesday in the presence of visiting German President Johannes Rau. A statement issued by the German embassy here said the institute would provide training to industrial employees, job-entry training for job seekers and disadvantaged persons and consultancy in advanced technology. The institute will be based on a similar facility set up by India and Germany at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The new institute will be run by a society comprising representatives of the government, industry and Gayatri Vidya Parishad (GVP), an organisation engaged in technical education in Andhra Pradesh. GTZ, the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, will support the institute with high-tech investment, expertise and training. The Andhra Pradesh government will provide 40 million and the GVP 25 million for the institute over the next five years. The statement said the institute would work to create a workforce that can act independently and solve production and maintenance problems instantly and autonomously.
