Bangalore: 57 percent of engineering doctorates awarded in the US go to foreign nationals, most of who are from India and East-Asia. The Times of India also reported in 2008 that 34 percent of the employees at Microsoft, 28 percent at IBM, and 17 percent at Intel are Indians.

These statistics highlight a study conducted by the National Science Board in the US which reported that R&D jobs in the fields of science and technology were being drawn to Asia. The study which collected data over the past decade showed that the US has lost about 28 percent of its high-tech jobs (which amount to a loss of 687,000 jobs) from 2000 to 2010 as a result of its diminishing lead in the field of science and technology.

American multinational corporations such as 3M, Caterpillar and General Electric are a few companies that have invested billions of dollars in expanding their research labs beyond the boundaries of the U.S, Companies like these aim at making use of a larger pool of scientific talent and innovation, while building products to suit the needs of markets in other countries, and earning favor with foreign governments, reported the Wall Street Journal.
