India, Bangladesh hold economic discussions

DHAKA: The India-Bangladesh joint economic commission began a two-day meeting here Monday to discuss measures to strengthen economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries. Indian External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha is leading the Indian delegation to the meeting. Te delegation includes representatives from the ministries of external affairs, commerce, finance, shipping, road transport and highways and railways. "The people and government of India attach the greatest importance to the bonds of friendship between our two countries," Sinha said in a statement on his arrival here. "The principal objective of my visit is to reaffirm our commitment to this valued relationship and to find ways of further enriching our many faceted relationship." Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan will lead the Bangladesh side at the meeting. Sinha is also expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the president and the leader of opposition. Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal led the Indian side at the meeting of the standing committee of officials that preceded the meeting of the economic commission.
