India 4th largest illegal downloader of online content
Tuesday, 15 December 2009, 19:03 Hrs
Mumbai: India is the fourth largest illegal downloader of online content, according to two reports released Tuesday by the Motion Picture Distributors Association (MPDA).
The reports were prepared on behalf of MPDA by Envisional and DtecNet, two global firms engaged in providing software solutions to track and prevent piracy of digital content and online business.

According to their findings, India trails only the U.S., Britain and Canada in online copyright infringement.
Envisional's report said online piracy of film and television content in India is mainly through file-sharing networks like BitTorrent and cyberlockers, or web-based file hosts such as RapidShare or HotFile.
"The numbers that the surveys have come up with underpin our constant refrain that the economic and social impact of online piracy is enormous and will have even greater long-term implications if not addressed," said Michael Ellis, president and managing director of Motion Pictures Association (Asia-Pacific), in a statement.
"We are aware that more needs to be done to help people understand that when they take unauthorised content off the Internet, or pay next to nothing from a pirate street vendor, they are indulging in online theft and therefore damage the very movie-making community that has been bringing them entertainment," he added.
The report by DtecNet that is based on tracking illegal downloading IP addresses on P2P (Peer to Peer) networks, showed that from April to September 2009, India was among the top 10 countries in the world with the largest number of illegal P2P activities.
The research also claimed that India had the highest level of film piracy in any English-speaking country in that period.
It also said Hindi films are the most widely available domestic Indian content with most downloaders in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Vishal Bhardwaj's "Kaminey" is estimated to have been downloaded over 350,000 times on BitTorrent with around two-third of downloaders located in India.
Tamil films are mostly downloaded in Chennai and Bangalore, while Telugu films are targeted in Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Rajiv Dalal, managing director, MPDA (India) said strict laws were needed to end unauthorised downloading.
"We need strong laws to support copyright, strong enforcement of those laws, stiff sentences for people who violate those laws, and most important, an understanding by ordinary citizen that buying pirated movies hurts the industry and makes it difficult for movie-makers to make new films," said Dalal.
According to an Ernst and Young 2008 report on "The Effects of Counterfeiting and Piracy on India's Entertainment Industry", the Indian film industry lost $959 million and 571,896 jobs due to piracy.

2: Shameful it is and we are shameless also. P2P
is a network which I think can never be
stopped. It is as simple as I buy a
book(non-pirated ofcourse!) and pass it among
my friends after I finish reading. Is it
illegal? no it is not and so even P2P sharing
can be justified by many. Though around the
world the noose is tightening around the
Torrent community for e.g. few weeks back the
site Mininova was asked to upload only legal
torrents by a court ruling. Prior to that
Supernova met its end. But does that mean
that other P2P sites have stopped
functioning?....no. If one is stopped then it
will again come back using some other name.
It's like a Phoenix. So the bottom line is:
P2P is there to stay!

3: Why didn't the movie Ghajni get
downloaded?...Oh did I hear "It too got
downloaded"? May be good movies should be
made so that people watch it in the theater.
Take this as a challenge MPDA. and please get
this straight. You CANNOT stop piracy.
Downloading will not stop if internet is
there. If you want profits, make good movies
then people will feel the worth of watching
it in the theater. OR give an option cheaper
than downloading so that the money does not
go to the black marketeers. There are strong
laws to punish ppl who commit murder. DID IT
EVER STOP?

4:Fully agree with you. It is getting difficult
to watch movies in theaters when tickets are
getting costlier n costlier day by day and,
approx 2-3 movies are hitting the screen
every week.

8: Hi,
Is there any pint in blaming the politicians,if we are downloading with out proper rights.
If they are increasing the movie ticket fare, stop watching movies till they reduce the price.
How many of us will do this?

10:Don't tell me that you don't DL. People these
days watch around a 100 movies per month and
listen to around 10-15 albums a month which
if purchased will be damn expensive . So when
God has provided us with DL option for
free...why not utilise it and save our hard
earned money.

12: Agree with Prashantha...shameful act or not
everyone does it and are amlost dependent on
it.It is OK to say softwares should not be
downloaded especially security programs but
for the movies and music, people listen to
songs on the internet before they actually
want to buy it or not.

14: "Mininova" a term synonymous to free
download..has recently been curbed with a "Go
Legit" tag..and now hosts free content only.
This rule was given by the Dutch
court.....
But to give it a thought, has it really stopped anythng at all? "WE" so called Illegal Dowloaders were a bit upset about the shutting down of the "Largest bittorrent Indexing site"..bt then few days later we all got back to other trillions of websites with similar content...
So, to stop piracy.. they (Govt, MPDA etc..) will have to cross over hundreds of levels..and foreseeing the current situation, this huge a step is simply impossible.
So, either ask Aamir to host his movies free over torrents...and earn royalty through traffic, or reduce the movie costs in theater...
