Ikanos to launch Fx chipsets in India

BANGALORE: US-based broadband solutions designer Ikanos Communications today said it aimed to tap into the growing broadband business in the country with the launch of its Fx family of chipsets, which can transmit 100 Mbps of bandwidth on a copper land line of a service provider. Privately-held Ikanos, which has a Bangalore development centre was in talks with major telecom players in the country for marketing its system, Ikanos Vice President Marketing Richard Sekar told reporters here. "We are in discussions with all the telecom service providers. They have invested heavily on their optic fibre backbone and have a hitch in the last mile access. Our equipment can bridge the problem," Sekar said. He said Ikanos's equipment could be deployed at $300 for providing 100 Mbps bandwidth on a copper land line, compared to costs of over $14,000 for fibre optic connectivity. Sekar said Reliance was aiming to provide 100 Mbps bandwidth for about five lakh business establishments. He said Ikanos planned to double its engineering strength to about 60 professionals this year from 30 at present
