IT firm, Cerebra to open e- waste recycling unit in Bangalore

Bangalore: Cerebra Integrated Technologies, an IT firm which currently specializes in services such as legal process outsourcing, medical transcription and electronic manufacturing. It's investing `50 crore, part of which it's raising by equity dilution, in a proposed e-waste recycling unit in Bangalore. The company is going to tie up with three Singapore-based companies, including the oldest electronic waste recycling firms in Asia ie, Cimelia Resource Recovery to meet the environmental concerns which is in an increasing demand in India for the safe disposal of old and defective devices. "This e-waste business is a natural extension of our current business as a hardware company. Cerebra has paid the Karnataka government 7 crore for the 10-acre plot that will house the unit," said Managing Director V. Ranganathan. "When we get defective equipment or waste, at first there will be a checking whether we can repair it and send it back to the manufacturers, or we fix the components. The components that are unable to repair will sent for being powdered in Singapore." The project assures to promote greener growth and the company is yet to get the regulations on the safe disposal of e-waste from the government. Karnataka has extended its invitation by signing a memorandum of understanding with the organization. Currently, most of the waste ends up in city dumps, often very close to the slums where the poorest of the urban poor live. The e-waste market in India is large but not integrated. The firm is planning to roll out the project in the upcoming year and plans to begin operations as soon as the plant is built.
