IT biggies to woo foreign grads with paid internships
Mumbai: Indian IT companies are attracting talent from German, Swiss and Austrian universities to work in India as paid interns. Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant and Mindtree are among the nine companies that have taken the lead by joining hands with the Frankfurt-based Vibe Internships to create 50 paid internship positions in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore, said Dr Karl Kurbel, Project Supervisor of Vibe Internships and Head of the Business Informatics Chair at the European University Viadrina (EUV) to Business Line.

The interns will be paid between 150 euro and 600 euro (approximately 10,000- 40,000) a month for three- to six-month projects for business development, test automation, software development. Unlike U.S., European countries have been a bit reserved when it comes to sending people to India due to cultural issues and linguistic barriers.

Indian IT firms are evaluating this initiative in the context of their market development and brand building strategy for Germany. "As part of our brand building initiatives in Germany, we will get these interns to work out of our centers here as a result of which they will gain considerable exposure to the global delivery model. Our endeavor is to hire the best of these interns for client facing operations in Germany," said Nandita Gurjar, Senior Vice-President and Global HR Head, Infosys Technologies.

As of 2008, the market for IT services in Germany was 33 billion euro. While the case for offshore services is slowly registering in the minds of German managers, only a very few really believe it is a strategic imperative.

This program could help clear misgiving about offshoring causing job losses, as the participating offshore firms will create a significant number of new employment opportunities for top talent in Germany, said Peter Schumacher, President and CEO of Value Leadership Group, a strategic management consultancy firm, which advised Prof Kurbel and Vibe Internships for the initiative.

Puneet Jetli, Head, People Function, at the Bangalore-based Mindtree Consulting, said the company was still working out the stipend details for the initiative. "We will try to structure the stipend in such a way that the interns can help recover the costs as well as see a bit of India," he said.

Cognizant, Hexaware and L&T Infotech have also agreed to participate in this internship program.

1: It is not so bad as we think. This is the time of growing India as almost talents have to move to India as India getting top most position in the world. If talents from other countries are called to work here, it is better opportunities for the Indians to grow up their skillness, to learn their tchnique, because the competitions will be increased then skillness of Indians will be automatically increased in the all fields as they will have to do for betterment getting the jobs. Think Positive & be more progressive.

no sandy, if u see. lot of high quality of software is written actually by programmers of eastern europe(RUSSI,POLES,DANISH,GERMANS ETC)..we assume that americans are good in that..that is a wrong assumption..american are more into business..so actually if indian business want to break away from their family business show on which many serials are based where founder is still in the show, then it looks good..they are seriously assuming to do some good work...my only lament is that when it came to give good work to indians, no one is supporting it

4: Talk is cheap, They talk about talent crunch, need more training, now hire intern from west. Who going to come to work as intern in india, they trying to pressure employees. its true that talent can't be created over night. These indian IT companies are marely a technical recruiters borne out of opportunity of IT boom in USA. Its management whom to blame not employees, intern can not invent and trun IT companies into innovation hub, they could have aquired software or IT companies, how many aquisition india made compare to china, but no one want to spend any single penny, after all we all Indians.

5: It the financial bottomlines and underbellies folks, ...

Please understand this. Unlike the US, a greater part of the affluent Europe does not speak English, does business either in German, French, Danish or Russian. With $33B to salivate after, why should any sane businessman ingore the need to recruit some locals to help find the market.

Image? My foot - these are the very companies that have drained employment opportunities for aspiring young people in the developed nations. This might sound like unpatriotic to some you in India, but having lived on both sides of hte national divide, I have seen first hand how many US people are thrown on the wayside to help corporate greed in both US and India. If the pathetic working conditions are any indication, those in India should also realize these IT slave camps do not exist to get jobs to India, but bilk the people everywhere. If IT labor becomes cheaper in China tomorrow, Premzi and Narayana Murthy will be singing the glories to human rights repression in China, while hiring cheap.

Also, please consider this: the minimum wage in the US is $7.25, or approximately 6 Euros per hours. At the rate of 160 hours per month, the minimum wage in the US should be 960 Euros. Gentlemen - what these India SW gaints are willing to pay to these interns is well below minimum wage in their respective countries, folks! Of course, the opportinity to see India might appeal to some, but I will guarantee that they will be tne best from their respective schools. nor will be interested in the scrap of scrap projects outsourced to these Indian firms.

In retrospect, these IT firms are timing it well to employ some candidates from developed countries - at a time when an economic cluster bomb (engineering by the big banks in the US & Europe) as sucked our all employment oxygen from their respecive nation.

But 600 paid internships between 9 companies that collectively employ some 500,000 people? For less than minimum wage, ...

I hope silicon India will stay around to report the success of this program.

By starting like "Indian IT companies are attracting talent from, ..." Silicon India seems to declare success even before the program took footing on ground. Looks like Si India & Nasscom are the propaganda wings of these IT companies. Just like MSNBC is the propaganda arm of GE.

7: It really is pathetic for a developing country like India, which is considered to be IT hub, to have it's own companies looking for talent outside the country. This certainly is a matter to be concerned, because hiring from outside does not profit our companies as well, and if it is the case, then there is something serious for us Indians to think about.

The institutions in India too need to be monitored closely, for quality of education provided. This needs to be treated as a serious issue and the Govt. needs to take some necessary action. Else, in no time, the companies might start moving out of the country as well.

8: instead of creating opportunities for india... companies are getting diversified elsewhere...

it is better to absorb trainee of mca.. and M.E students of final year..-sunil

9: This way the IT Companies in India have advantage of getting foreign trained Graduates. In German Universities after Two Semesters (M.Sc Program) one has to work in an Industry as Practicum for 6 months followed by Thesis (6 Months). This practicum/thesis, the Students of Indian origin can work in India. The Bright Students can be absorbed by IT Indian Companies.

10: I agree that when there are so many unemployed people in India it is not the right thing to go abroad and offer jobs. But on the hindsight, I think what they are doing is trying to bring in some diversity among the work culture. Its not like they are recruiting people in 1000's from abroad and ignoring the indian workforce. If anything we should be thankful to these IT companies for putting India on the global map. It is just a handful of people who are being selected and also it should definitely help the companies in spreading the great indian story abroad.

12: There are lakhs of intelligent educated Indian grads who could be trained - employment scenario of India could be improved. But these IT companies hardly consider themselves Indian.

13: In that much money they can hire two, maybe three interns from India. What a waste

Hello Folks, leaving two or three, I feel most of the comments made are quite ammaturish. Please remember three things .
1. The decision makers in these IT Companies are Indians
2. The article never said that it is only engineers who are employed here.
3. You cant hire and make use of an single employee if you dont have work(Projects to work on) and those can be acheived only through business deals and relations.

In this case, I can see three advantages to IT companies and Indian Talent.
1. Europe is a much mature and unexplored market than US. By hiring some interns, IT companies are making their presence felt in EU by spending almost peanuts
2. Remember, They are hiring for internships, not full time jobs, once, if the company can impress the young grad or post grad in these 6 months, imagine the image they carry back to EU and hence forth to the company they join later from University. It can be our potential client and he can be a potential referee for an Indian IT Company in EU.
3. And finally, they are using these Interns (for 3-6 months) as a fill in for the part time requirements in the specific feilds.(like German Translations, Client Relationships etc) and they also learn from this intern about the Business atmosphere in EU inorder to establish themselves as a new Business players in EU.

from either of the three ways, this will fuel the business in India and I can see a whole lot of new employement opportunities for Indians in future.
So, dont make a heck about this issue. This is inturn a good sign for us :)

Exactly agreed with Kashif, when the people in India thinks low grade and cheap workers about ourself then, we don't have any way to stop thinking same about Indian workers, we must change our mentality and so force others to same, i thought Indian professionals are great and has a very respectful place in World atleast in my work i know many peoples who are at the top.

From my personal experience, I'll just say that Indian's at the current moment are not treated well in foreign countries and many countries have resorted in replacing the Indian man force with people from Philippines etc. Indians have always shown remarkable growth in any field of work and are always at the top most, but in the current market scenario they need people who are more into (buttering which i feel Indians resist as they have more of integrity. The best options i would feel is provide the opportunity to Indians rather than foreigners or call back some part of Indians who have worked in these countries. This way you hire your own people & diversify in the business world.
