SRIHARIKOTA: The INSAT 4-C satellite launched Monday from Sriharikota off Andhra Pradesh exploded and collapsed into the sea shortly after launch. Scientists at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre blamed a technical snag for the disaster. The geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle, GSLV-FO2, took off from the Sriharikota station at 5.38 p.m. But after about soaring 70-100 km into the sky, it turned on itself and fell into the Bay of Bengal. "There seems to be a mishap in the first stage of launch," Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) director G. Madhavan Nair told reporters here. "We have to analyze the data." The heaviest satellite India has ever attempted to put in space, it was the fist INSAT class satellite being launched from the country. This was the first attempt by India to launch a heavy satellite and if successful, it would have put India on the world map.
